If you have always had an interest in art, history, and culture and want to be involved with a museum, the Museum Host programme is for you! The Museum Host volunteer programme offers a wide range of learning opportunities at the museum – from visitor service to administering programmes and exhibitions. A vital part of the museum’s volunteer corps, Museum Hosts help our museum enhance and deliver a welcoming, positive, and memorable visitor experience.


Our first recruitment period is 22 October to 31 December 2019.

About Museum Hosts


1. Who are Museum Hosts?

Museum Hosts (MH) are volunteers for the Asian Civilisations Museum. We are ambassadors of the museum who serve to make the space a more hospitable and friendly environment for all visitors.


2. What do we do?

Our activities and duties help to support museum events and functions, including:

  • Welcome visitors to the museum
  • Provide general information on available exhibitions, programmes and public offerings, wayfinding within the museum, and amenities and facilities at the museum and in the surrounding arts precinct
  • Engage with visitors who want to learn about the galleries and exhibitions, and inform them of available resources
  • Conduct surveys and collect feedback on exhibitions or during major programmes and festivals
  • Assist with the operation of digital equipment in the galleries when necessary
  • Assist to safeguard the objects in the galleries
  • Assist with crowd control
  • Provide event support for festival programmes

3. What is our objective?

To support the museum’s various initiatives, programmes, and ventures, while constantly adapting to meet the different needs of museum visitors.


4. When and where are our activities performed?

Our main activities take place during weekends at the Asian Civilisations Museum, and include:

Meet and Greet, Front Desk, and Gallery Support [Daily]

Weekdays

  • 11.30am–1.30pm
  • 1–3pm
  • 5–7pm (Fridays only, when required)

Weekends

  • 11.30am–1.30pm
  • 1–3pm
  • 3–5pm

More time slots might be added during special exhibition periods


Programme Support [Depends on timing and dates of scheduled events]

Examples include:

  • Singapore Heritage Fest, Light to Night Festival, and Children’s Season
  • Special events and programmes (Weekend festivals, lunchtime concerts, ACM After Dark, NYE countdown)
  • Regular programmes (Saturdays@ACM, Asian Culture & Music Series)

We welcome volunteers to assist on a daily basis!

 

Museum Host requirements


5. What are the requirements to volunteer as an ACM Museum Host?

MHs should have a pleasant and lively personality, and be approachable and eager to speak to visitors. Applicants must be at least 18 years old (18-year-olds are required to seek parental consent before applying).

Applicants must also be able to:

  • Express themselves clearly in English (We welcome volunteers fluent in second and third languages as well!)
  • Commit to a minimum of two years of service
  • Attend 75% of the Museum Host training sessions at ACM
  • Volunteer with us for Meet & Greet and/or Accessibility-related functions at least 12 times a year

6. When are the training dates?

The training will take place in February 2020. More details will be shared during the interview to confirm your availability.


7. Are non-Singaporeans eligible to be a Museum Host?

Yes, if the above criteria are fulfilled.

9. How will I be shortlisted and when will I be notified?

Eligible applicants will be shortlisted for an interview. Applicants will be notified of their eligibility and interview details after the recruitment period has ended. The interviews will be in January 2020.

Interviewees will be notified of the results by early February 2020, and details of training will be announced.
